Henry Hill School bell awaits its return
A piece of the community’s history quietly sits in the basement of Glencoe City Center waiting for its time to be returned to public view.
A bell that called students to school from its mounted position over Henry Hill School has spent years in the basement, said Gloria Hilgers of the Glencoe Historical Preservation Society (GHPS). The society is in the early stages of planning how it wants to display the historic cast-iron bell and fundraising for the display.
Henry Hill School succeeded Stevens Seminary, the community’s first school. J.H. Stevens was one of the founders of Glencoe and Henry Hill was one of the early trustees of Stevens Seminary. Stevens Seminary served the community from 1871 to 1893.
