An important message for upcoming blood drive

To the editor,
The second Glencoe Community Blood Drive of 2019 is scheduled in one week, Wednesday, July 24, at the Glencoe City Center ballroom from 1 to 7 p.m.
You will recall that the first 2019 blood drive on April 10 was cancelled because of worsening winter storm conditions that day, and we lost the opportunity to collect all those scheduled blood donations.
This notice will be short and to the point:
• The American Red Cross is in dire need of blood donations. They are calling this situation an emergency need; blood donations are leaving the shelves faster than they are being received. All blood types are needed.
• You have blood.
• Donate.
• If you have a donation appointment, keep it.
• Our registration has many openings, especially after 2:30 p.m. Please call our Scheduling Coordinator Nelda Klaustermeier at 320-864-3475 and schedule your appointment.
• There is a 56-day waiting period between blood donations. Please note: If you generously gave a donation at the American Red Cross blood drive held at Good Shepherd Church in Glencoe on May 30, you are not eligible to donate at this July 24 drive. It is only 55 days between those donation dates and the Red Cross will not accept your appointment or waive that requirement. You may, however, preschedule your appointment for our last 2019 blood drive held on Wednesday, Nov. 20.
• Save time at the blood drive by using RapidPass to complete online your pre-donation reading and health history. Log on at redcrossblood.org/rapidpass and follow the directions. This must be done the day of the drive, July 24. Print or email the PDF to yourself so you can show it when you come to donate. If you don’t do it correctly, you will be asked to complete all the questions again at the drive.
• Advice to Walk-ins: Typically, there are no-shows or deferrals (ineligible to donate at this drive), so walk-ins are needed. The Red Cross honors appointments first. We cannot create space where the schedule is already full, but we appreciate those who come in on the chance of an opening. If you decide you want to be a walk-in, be prepared to wait – maybe for quite a while. Don’t plan to “walk-in” during the first hours of the drive, as the time slots are filled. If you decide to walk-in, please come after 2:30 p.m.
Blood is a perishable product, lasting only 42 days. Blood cannot be made, only given. Your one donated unit has the potential to help or save up to three patients. Every donation means more lives are saved. Every unit counts.
Thanks for donating. The need is great.

Charleen Engelmann,
coordinator
