Jail project back on agenda June 23

Board of Commissioners will take up its proposed jail expansion and courthouse security plans in a workshop session Tuesday, June 23. The workshop has been scheduled for a day in which no regular meeting has been scheduled. Which is good, because the Board needs to take the time to fully debate how to get the proposal under its original budget.
Readers may recall that the project was put on hold earlier this year when bids came in $2 million over the estimated cost, which was about $7.2 million. At that time, the County Board referred the project back to its architectural firm, Wold Architects, to come up with suggestions on how to revamp the proposal to bring it back in line with original cost estimates.
One area we would propose reviewing is the new lobby area that would be shared by the law enforcement center and the court administration area. Drawings of the new lobby were impressive, and there is no doubt that the lobby as proposed would have provided a welcoming focal point for visitors. But it seemed overly large to us, and perhaps could be reduced to now meet the budget.
We assume that whatever new proposals come forward, it will involve scaling back square footage. We also assume that the County Board and its architects will focus on the most pressing needs of the project — increasing cell space so the county no longer — or very seldom — has to board inmates in other facilities, creating appropriate program spaces to meet Department of Corrections standards, and the need for additional security within the courthouse.
Overall, we think an addition to the courthouse and jail is needed, and we appreciate the commissioners’ desire to accomplish that without burdening taxpayers by using the bequest from the late Annamarie Tudhope and existing funds.
We look forward to hearing what the new proposal will be, and to a successful project for our jail, courthouse and county.
