James Anthony Hartl, 55, of Glencoe

James Hartl
James Anthony Hartl, 55, of Glencoe, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016.

A memorial service was held Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Maresh Funeral Chapel in Silver Lake, followed by inurnment at St. Anastasia Catholic Cemetery in Hutchinson.

James Anthony Hartl was born March 1, 1960, in Harvey, North Dakota, to James and Joann (Breyer) Hartl. He spent his childhood in Fessenden, North Dakota, before he and his family moved to Arlington, and then eventually to Glencoe, where he attended school and graduated from high school with the class of 1978.

He was united in marriage to Barbara Mary Ewalt on Nov. 6, 1982, in Glencoe. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Amy Josephine.  The family made their home in Glencoe, where Mr. Hartl pursued his passion of life on the road and made truck driving his career. He most recently was employed with Bob Fritz Trucking of Cologne.

In addition to his love of trucks, Mr. Hartl also loved stock car and sprint car racing. Whether he was working on a pit crew or just “tinkering around” fixing cars, Mr. Hartl enjoyed anything with wheels, including his Chopper motorcycle, from which he earned his nickname “Chopper.” He also was looking forward to the start of the NASCAR season. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing cards and Yahtzee, and always looked forward to spending time outdoors camping and fishing. Above all, Mr. Hartl loved his family. He was especially proud of his daughter, Amy, and cherished the time spent with his pride and joy, his grandson, Jayden. He also loved the time spent vacationing with his wife, Barb, in one of his favorite places, Duluth.

Blessed to have shared in his life are his wife, Barbara Hartl of Glencoe; daughter, Amy (Jeff) McKay of Hutchinson; grandson, Jayden James McKay of Hutchinson; brother, Jerry (Rachel) Hartl of Glencoe; sister, Julie (Scott) Hagen of Robbinsdale; godson, Clayton Burkstrand of Hutchinson; godparents, Robert Breyer of South Carolina and Cecelia Ferry of Manvel, North Dakota; brothers-in-law, Jim (Sue) Ewalt of Mason City, Iowa, Rick (Jeanne) Ewalt of Webster, South Dakota, and Credan Ewalt of Webster, South Dakota; sisters-in-law, Cathy McLagan of Hutchinson, Teri Ewalt (Ron Jaspers) of Webster, South Dakota, and Becky Smith of Aberdeen, South Dakota; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; sisters, Jodi Hartl and Jean Hartl; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Valery and Helen Ewalt; and brothers-in-law, Chuck McLagan and Terry Smith.
