Kerry, Jen Venier named Pola-Czesky grand marshals

Kerry and Jen Venier

Kerry and Jen Venier were honored by the town they “fell in love with” 15 years ago by being named the grand marshals of the Silver Lake Pola-Czesky Days parade.
As grand marshals, they were present throughout last weekend’s celebration, and rode in the parade Sunday afternoon.
Natives of Duluth, the Veniers ended up in Silver Lake by a roundabout route that took them to Wisconsin, the state of Virginia and the city of Chaska.
Kerry Venier is the current city clerk in Silver Lake. A political science major, he started his career by working for a “controversial” mayor in Superior, Wisconsin. The experience left him a little sour on municipal politics, and he started working in the restaurant business.
The family spent a few years in Virginia, and eventually moved back to Minnesota to be closer to extended family.
While living in Chaska, the Veniers began looking for a bigger house for their growing family. Knowing that housing was less expensive outside the metro area, they began looking in this area.
And they found a house in Silver Lake, and “just fell in love” with the community, Kerry Venier said.
As they looked at houses, Kerry and Jen Venier walked around downtown. Jen Venier had been involved in day care, and they stopped in at what was then a day care on Main Street. Right away, Jen Venier was offered a job.
After the day care closed, Jen Venier began operating a day care in the family home.
A year later, the job of city clerk opened up, and Kerry Venier decided to make the transition back into local government.
Venier described it as an ideal job for a person with a young family.
“It was very flexible,” said Venier. “If I wanted to go on a field trip with my kids, I could.”
And it wasn’t long before both Veniers were invited to become more involved with the community. Because he was around during the daytime, Venier was invited to join the fire department. Jen Venier decided to pursue her emergency medical technician (EMT) certification, and joined the Silver Lake Ambulance crew. She later also joined the fire department.
Both also are members of the Silver Lake Lions Club.
