Lady Panthers closing in on conference championship

With another three-game sweep in its lone match last week, the Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team continued its march towards the Wright County Conference West title. The Panthers proved to be rude guests to the Royals on Friday, Oct. 9, thumping their hosts 25-13, 25-14, 25-12 to improve to 20-4 overall and 5-0 in WCC West play.
It was the ninth victory in a row for GSL, who travel southeast for the Rochester Exchange Club Invitational this coming Friday and Saturday. The Panthers have not lost since dropping a 3-1 match at Mayer Lutheran – ranked third in Class A – on Sept. 24. However, the team is remaining grounded despite its victory run.
“I think being on a streak does sit in the back of our heads, but I also think we just go in and play each game,” middle hitter Maddie Monahan said. “We play our hardest and give all the effort we can; if we win great, and if we lose then we know what we have to work on to get back to the winning side.”
GSL had little trouble with Watertown-Mayer last Friday, posting the ninth sweep in its last 11 matches. Monahan led the way with 11 kills, with outside hitter Taylor Novak recording eight and middle hitter Erika Ribar seven.
Novak also posted a team-high 22 digs, while setter Layne Herrmann paced the Panthers with 31 set assists. Libero Emily Muetzel and setter Jessica Lemke had 18 and 17 digs, respectively.
