Lady Panthers pounce on Albert Lea in opener

The Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team got its season off on the right foot by means of a dominant defeat of Albert Lea in Hopkins on Saturday, Aug. 29. The Lady Panthers had little trouble with the Tigers, sweeping the match in three-straight games: 25-18, 25-17, 25-12.
Middle hitters Maddie Monahan and Maddy Kalenberg led GSL with five kills apiece, while middle Erika Ribar and outside hitter Taylor Novak had four kills each. Novak also led the squad with three service aces. Setter Layne Herrmann had a team-high 17 set assists.
“It was a great digging game,” coach Lori Schwirtz said.
Five of the Lady Panthers put up double-digit dig totals, despite the quick match. Libero Emily Muetzel led the way with 16 digs, followed by setter Jessica Lemke with 15, Novak with 13, Herrmann with 12 and outside Cortney Konen with 11.
GSL hosted section rival Norwood Young America on Tuesday night, after the Chronicle went to press. The Lady Panthers will play Thursday at Mound Westonka in their Wright County Conference opener.
