Leona Karg, 92, of Hutchinson, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 27, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Acoma Township with the Rev. Eugene DeVries officiating. Jane Vacek was the organist. Soloist Theresa Wemhoff performed a special song for Mom. Congregational hymns were “Abide With Me,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “How Great Thou Art.”
Casket bearers were Tim Krasen, Lynn Milbrett, John Kalenberg, Jon Hoff, Del Prieve and Brian Schuette. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Leona Helen Karg was born July 20, 1925, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Herman and Edna (Steffen) Raether. She was baptized as an infant on Aug. 9, 1925, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Acoma Township by the Rev. Fischer. She was confirmed in her faith as a youth on May 1, 1938, at Immanuel Lutheran Church by the Rev. Voigt. She received her education at Immanuel Lutheran School and was a graduate of the Hutchinson High School class of 1943. She was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
On Nov. 4, 1945, she was united in marriage to Edwin Karg at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Acoma Township by the Rev. W.G. Voigt. Their marriage was blessed with one son, Larry. The couple resided in Acoma Township. She spent her entire life on her family farm, which was a century farm. They shared 58 years of marriage before Mr. Karg died on Jan. 11, 2004.
Mrs. Karg worked at Montgomery Ward, Hartwigs Clothing and Audrey’s Drive-In while being a loving farm wife and homemaker to her husband and son.
She was an active and lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Acoma Township, and was a member of the Ladies Aid group, Sunday school teacher, treasurer of Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL), and a branch member of the Hutchinson Hospital Auxiliary. She also was a member of Good Sam’s. She helped her husband found and establish the Upper Midwest Allis-Chalmers Club in 1991, and sponsored the Orange Spectacular on the farm for 20 years.
She enjoyed playing bingo and cards, camping, traveling, watching birds and caring for her pet cats and dogs. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
In 2010, when she needed help with her daily care, she moved to Prince of Peace Retirement Home in Hutchinson, where she lived for seven years until she became a resident of Harmony River Living Center on July 26, 2017.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Joan Karg of Hutchinson; nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Edna Raether; husband, Edwin Karg; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Peter Karg, Henry and Elsie Karg, John and Leila Karg, Phil and Shirley Karg, Elsie and Orville Olson, Mary and Alex Trippel and Betty and Wilbert Bohnen.
