Letter to editor – Be prepared for ARC Bloodmobile’s visit to Glencoe

To the editor,
We are one week away from the third and final 2019 Glencoe Community Blood Drive for the year, next Wednesday, Nov. 20, 1–7 p.m. at the Glencoe City Center ballroom. The American Red Cross has set our goal at 104 units for this blood drive.
The ARC is facing an urgent need for blood and all donors are needed to protect patient care. If you already have an appointment, thank you. We remind you to please keep it. If you haven’t yet reserved an appointment time, please contact our scheduling coordinator Nelda Klaustermeier at 320-864-3475 to check for any openings. At each blood drive, appointments always have priority over walk-ins.
The convenient American Red Cross program, RapidPass, is a way for blood donors to complete their pre-reading and donation questions online from the comfort and privacy of their own home or office.
To use RapidPass, participating donors should follow these steps:
•Visit
redcrossblood.org/rapidpass and read the information. Answer the questions.
• Print the RapidPass or email the PDF to yourself so that it shows on your mobile device when you come to donate.
There are some important things to remember
• RapidPass cannot be completed prior to the date of the drive. Donors must complete the steps to redeem their pass on the day they donate, next Wednesday Nov. 20.
• Donors who do not bring the printed pass with them to their donation, or cannot show it on their mobile device, will be asked to complete the questions again.
RapidPass is only used to complete the pre-reading and pre-donation questionnaire in advance of your appointment; it does not take the place of scheduling an appointment. If you do decide not to use the RapidPass online tool, you will be following the usual procedure of completing the required paperwork and medical questionnaire at the blood drive.
Lastly, advice to walk-ins: As I mentioned above, the Red Cross honors appointments first. But walk-ins are needed. Typically, there may be 20-or-more no-shows and deferrals (ineligible to give at this drive) at a drive. It is our walk-ins, then, who are so important for filling those emptied slots so we can meet our goal. We can’t promise that walk-ins will be able to donate as we cannot create space where the schedule is already full, but we appreciate those who come in on the chance of an opening and an opportunity to give blood. The first hours are fully booked, so don’t plan to walk-in before 2:30 p.m. If you decide you want to be a walk-in, be prepared to wait, maybe a long time.
Please help us meet or surpass our goal. Your donation is crucially needed. Every unit counts, no matter what blood type you are, but Type O blood donors have the biggest impact. Make a thanks-giving donation and bless three patients with your gift of life. Your donation may mean the difference between a happy homecoming or a family tragedy for those who fall victim to illness or trauma.
Thank you for your commitment to help save lives. Thank you for your time and your donation next Wednesday, Nov. 20.
