Lillian “Lilly” Gertrude (Benkowski) Dammann

Lillian “Lilly” Gertrude (Benkowski) Dammann, 85, of Lester Prairie, passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 16, at Cedar Crest in Silver Lake.
A funeral service will be held today at 2:30 p.m., at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, with interment following at the church cemetery.
Pastor Eric Nelson is the officiating clergy.
Lynn Mueller is the organist with Lilly’s great-grandchildren providing special music, “Jesus Loves Me.”
“I Am But A Stranger Here,” “Now The Light Has Gone Away,” “Precious Lord, Take My Hand,” and “How Great Thou Art” are the congregational hymns.
Lilly’s family will bear the casket.
Lillian “Lilly” Gertrude (Benkowski) Dammann was born Feb. 22, 1933, in Virgen Township, Lester Prairie. She was the daughter of Ewald and Augusta (Klaustermeier) Benkowski. Lillian was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in her Lutheran faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church. She attended St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran School and Lester Prairie High School.
Sept. 19, 1950, Mrs. Dammann was united in marriage to Wilmer Dammann at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. She and Wilmer made their home in Lester Prairie. Their marriage was blessed with six children, Faye, Daniel, Peggy, Cindy, Thomas and Amy. Lilly and Wilmer shared over 40 years of marriage until Wilmer passed away May 23, 1991.
In addition to being a loving wife, mother and homemaker, Lilly worked at Schubert’s Grocery Store in Lester Prairie, Faye’s Foods in Glencoe and later enjoyed cleaning houses. Mrs. Dammann was a faithful member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie.
In her younger years, she enjoyed playing the trumpet and clarinet, ice skating and playing softball, where she was the star pitcher for her team. Mrs. Dammann loved playing cards, dancing, raising and butchering chickens, planting a vegetable garden and then canning from that garden. She especially enjoyed decorating her home for all of the holidays. In her short time at Cedar Crest, Mrs. Dammann made many friends with the staff members and residents. She became known as the “Candy Lady”. Mrs. Dammann treasured the time spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends.
Mrs. Dammann passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 16, at Cedar Crest in Silver Lake at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 25 days. Blessed be her memory.
Mrs. Dammann is survived by her children, Faye Bruckschen and her husband, Darrell, of Glencoe, Daniel “Dan” Dammann and his wife, Mary Jo, of Glencoe, Peggy Engelmann and her husband, Roger, of Plato, Cindy Selchow and her husband, Gary, of Buffalo, Thomas “Tom” Dammann and his wife, Geri, of Sauk Rapids, Amy Hafemann and her husband, Steven, of New Germany; grandchildren, Jamie (Tracy) Bruckschen, Jody (Aaron) Schultz, Matthew (Mandy) Dammann, Marc (Sarah) Dammann, Melissa Dammann, Becky (Mark) Reuter, Luke (Brittney) Dammann, Teresa (Jeff) Logue, Chris Engelmann, Josh (Kristin) Engelmann, Jen Selchow, Ryan Selchow, Eric Selchow, Jeremy (Alyssa) Hafemann, Jason Hafemann, Jared (fiancée, Amanda) Hafemann; great-grandchildren, Caden Bruckschen, Avery Schultz, Jurney Dammann, Paizley Dammann, Savanah Dammann, Mackenzie Dammann, Weston Dammann, Jack Behning, Noah Behning, Max Nelson, Kalia Nelson, Blair Rueter, Cassidy Rueter, Madalynn Rueter, Adeline Rueter, Samantha Logue; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ed LaMott, Orlin Graupmann, Arnold (Sandy) Burdorf, Lois (Warren) Budach, Norma (Fred) Scott, Lorraine Huitt, Wilbert (Cathy) Burdorf, Irma (Jim) Beebe; nephews, nieces, other relatives and many friends.
Mrs. Dammann is preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer Dammann; parents, Ewald and Augusta Benkowski; step-father, August Kruschke; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Paul and Helen Burdorf; sisters, Vera Fruetel and her husband, Virg, Dorothy LaMott, Ella Graupmann; sister-in-law, Esther Trebelhorn and her husband Ben; brother-in-law, Jimmie Huitt; other relatives.
