A look back at 2014: flooding again dominated the news

Jan. 1 — Missionaries Efi and Mindy (Lamberty) Tembon made plans to return to mission work in Cameroon after a lengthy stay in Minnesota. Mindy Tembon is a native of Glencoe.
Winners of the Glencoe Area Holly Days Lighting Contest were Tony Barth, 603 Fir Circle, first place; Leroy Lewin, 1527 Knight Ave., second place; and Dave Grimm, 210 Interwood Ave., third place. The contest was sponsored by the Glencoe Light & Power Commission.
Jan. 8 — Liam Henry Trebelhorn was the first baby born in 2014 at Glencoe Regional Health Services. He was born Jan. 3 at 4:26 p.m., and his parents are Luke and April Trebelhorn of Buffalo Lake.
The McLeod County Board of Commissioners ordered final plans for its proposed retrofit of its materials recovery facility (MRF) to accommodate one-sort recycling.
Linda Krueger of Glencoe reported that her group of volunteers set a record of sending off 163 packages for the Operation Minnesota Nice program, which sends care packages to military personnel during the holiday season.
Jan. 15 — The Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board’s selection of a chairperson for 2015 went to a deadlock three times before it finally gave up and postponed the decision. Both incumbent chairperson Clark Christianson and School Board Member Jamie Alsleben were nominated for the slot, and three times the vote was deadlocked at 3-3.
The McLeod County Board of Commissioners re-elected District 3 Commissioner Paul Wright as its chair and District 2 Commissioner Kermit Terlinden as its vice chair at its reorganizational meeting Jan. 7.
Ronald G. Kelm was awarded a plaque for 45 years of service to the Brownton Fire Department at the department’s annual banquet. Kelm served from Aug. 5, 1968, to Aug. 5, 2013.
Jan. 22 — Fire destroyed Sidco 4x4 on East Ninth Street in Glencoe Monday night, Jan. 20. Glencoe Fire Chief Ron Grack said the fire apparently started in the heating system. Responding fire departments included Glencoe, Plato, Norwood Young America, Brownton, Lester Prairie, New Germany and Green Isle.
A visiting judge took testimony in McLeod County’s petition regarding a ruling on whether the proceeds from the Annamarie Tudhope estate could be used for a jail addition. Tudhope left the bulk of her estate — about $4 million — to the county with instructions that it be used for a new county jail to be built in Glencoe.
Jan. 29 — Garry Allen Kontz, 55, of Stewart, died sometime Sunday night or early Monday morning of exposure during blizzard-like conditions over the weekend. According to the McLeod County Sheriff’s Office, Kontz’ vehicle had apparently become stuck in the snow near the intersection of County Road 7 and 70th Street, south of Stewart, and he attempted to walk for help. After he was reported missing, a search party began looking for Kontz and his body was discovered about 21⁄4 miles away from his vehicle.
