Luehmann is driven by spirit of volunteerism
At Trailblazer Transit’s most recent board meeting, board members took time to report on the conclusion of the volunteer driving program by looking at lifetime driver statistics. One person stood out more than the rest, Executive Director Gary Ludwig said, and by a lot.
Al Luehmann, a retired 40-year clergyman, outpaced other volunteer drivers by thousands of miles, hours and trips.
What started as a chance encounter, Luehmann and Ludwig first met at the old Granny’s Restaurant in Gaylord, which used to be an iconic restaurant to residents of the small town.
“These are unpaid, volunteer hours,” Ludwig deliberately pointed out as board members scanned lifetime volunteer driving program statistics. Luehmann totaled 309,610 miles, 12,375 hours of driving and 3,337 total trips.
“That’s how many times he left his house to volunteer,” said Ludwig after he read off how many total trips Luehmann took to the rest of the board. The next closest totals were 70,000 miles, 4,300 hours and 1,400 total trips less than what Luehmann logged during his time with Trailblazer.
