Marvin A. Nelsen, 85, of Hutchinson

Marvin A. Nelsen, 85, of Hutchinson, died Monday, June 15, 2015, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 18, at Hunter’s Ridge Community Church in Hutchinson. The Rev. Howard Anderson officiated. Pamela Houk was the pianist. The Rev. Howard and Becky Anderson sang “In the Garden.” There also was a duet of Mr. Nelsen’s granddaughter, Crystal “Annie” Wendlandt and his great-granddaughter, Hailey Wendlandt. Congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace/Jesus Saves,” “Victory in Jesus,” “My Savior’s Love,” “He Hideth My Soul” and “Follow On.”
Casket bearers were Marvin Seller, Michelle Stark, Mark Seller, Dietra Schaefer, Curt Carlson and Bruce Nelsen. Honorary bearers were Annika Nelsen, Lydia Nelsen, Lacie Nelsen, Bradley Midtling, Crystal Wendlandt, Mandi Olson and Jason Midtling. Interment was in Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Hutchinson.
Marvin Andrew Nelsen was born Nov. 2, 1929, in Hassan Valley Township, McLeod County. He was the seventh child of Henry and Emma (Karg) Nelsen.
On Sept. 1, 1951, he was united in marriage to Betty Jean Mosel in Hutchinson. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Lori, Bret and Bart. The couple shared 27 years of marriage before Mrs. Nelsen’s death on Dec. 1, 1978.
On May 9, 1987, Mr. Nelsen was united in marriage to Karen Joan (Holmbeck) Midtling in Hutchinson. They resided and farmed in Hutchinson Township, McLeod County, before moving to Hutchinson in 1991. They shared 28 years of marriage.
Mr. Nelsen was a lifelong farmer. He retired in 2006. he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed restoring old tractors, machinery and Karen’s antiques. He loved working with his hands. he was very creative and artistic in metal artwork. Tractor pulling was, at one time, a diversion in his life. Mr. Nelsen mentored his grandchildren and encouraged them. He was a good listener. He had a gentle, generous heart. He especially cherished spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends. He was loved and held in high esteem by his wife Karen and all of his family. He was a kind, faithful man. He loved his Bible, God’s precious word, and as a mature man he repented of his sins and trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior. He enjoyed being  farmer all of his life.
Mr. Nelsen was diagnosed in 2006 with lewy body dementia. When he needed assistance with his daily care, he became a resident of Burns Manor Nursing Home on Feb. 26, 2008, and moved to Harmony River Living Center in January 2012. His lewy body dementia took everything from him, except his Lord Jesus. His journey was long suffering, yet Mr. Nelsen remained a man who served the Lord, manifesting the Fruit of the Spirit (Galations 5:22-23).
He is survived by his wife, Karen Nelsen of Hutchinson; sons, Bret (Margie) Nelsen and Bart (Flor) Nelsen, all of Hutchinson; Mrs. Nelsen’s children, Barry (Sandra) Midtling of Port Washington, Wis., and Kerry (Tammy) Midtling of Henning; grandchildren, Lydia Nelsen, Annika Nelsen, Bonnie Nelsen, Bradley (Tina) Midtling, Crystal (Jordan) Wendlandt, Mandi (Jon) Olson and Jason Midtling; great-grandchildren, Lacie Nelsen, Hailey Wendlandt, Malakai Wendlandt, MaKenzie Midtling, Colton Midtling, Jakob Olson, Alexis Midtling and Chayce Midtling; brother, Leon Nelsen of Hutchinson; sisters, Rebecca Seller of Hutchinson, Ramona Buckentin of Arlington and Brenda (Doug) Peterson of Hutchinson; brothers-in-law, David Carlson of Hutchinson, Melvin (Dorothy) Holmbeck of Sioux Falls, S.D., and A. Robert (Judy) Holmbeck of Gaylord; sisters-in-law, Alvina Nelsen of Appleton, Mavis Holmbeck of Glencoe, Julia Holmbeck of Chaska and Carol Jean (Greg) Cliff of Blue River, Wis.; many nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Emma Nelsen; first wife, Betty Jean Nelsen; daughter, Lori Jean Nelsen; grandson, Matthew Nelsen; sisters, Lucinda (Fred) Hansch, Lillian (Earl) Dummer, Madaline (Neil) Stark and Marlene Carlson; brothers, Henry Nelsen, George Nelsen, LeRoy (Betty) Nelsen and Carl (Ruth) Nelsen; brothers-in-law, LeRoy Buckentin, Ervin Seller, Richard Holmbeck, Ronald (Pat) Holmbeck and PFC Richard J. Janski; sister-in-law, June (Donald) Stoterau; and parents-in-law, Alfred and Elizabeth Holmbeck.
