Mary Julia Monahan was born Sept. 4, 1919, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Julius “Jule” and Barbara (McCormick) Tully. She was baptized as an infant Sept. 14, 1919, by the Rev. Timothy O’Brien, and was confirmed in her faith as a youth, both at St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Hutchinson. She received her education in Hutchinson and was a 1938 graduate of Hutchinson High School.
On Dec. 15, 1942, she was united in marriage to William “Bill” Monahan at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in San Diego, California. The couple returned to call Hutchinson home, and were blessed with six children, Lee, Barbara, John, Michael, Pat and Maria. They shared 36 of years of marriage before Mr. Monahan’s death on April 18, 1979.
Mrs. Monahan was a loving mother and homemaker. She also was employed at 3M in Hutchinson from 1967 through 1985. She attended St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Hutchinson, where she was active in the church ministries. She also volunteered with the Hutchinson Hospital Auxiliary.
Mrs. Monahan was a caring and generous person with all her family and friends. She loved her home, with music always playing in the background, and she enjoyed tending to her flower gardens and singing birds. She cherished the comfort of family and friends coming by, quick to offer something to eat and her candy dishes were always filled with M&Ms and lemon drops. If she was away from home, one would always find a note on the kitchen table letting one know when she would be back — she never wanted to miss a visit. Most of all, she was a proud and loving Irish Catholic mother, absolutely devoted to her family. She took great joy in her children, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren who together form the Monahan family.
She treasured her independence and thus remained in the home she loved until she was 95. She then resided at Ecumen Pines and, within the past months, moved to Harmony River Living Center. She considered herself blessed to receive the assistance she needed from many kind and caring individuals.
She is survived by her children, Lee (Susie) Monahan of Silver Lake, Barbara (Ray) Bechtold of St. Joseph, John (Holly) Monahan of Plymouth, Michael (Juli) Monahan of Hutchinson, Pat (Holly) Monahan of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and Maria (Tom) Johnson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Michele Monahan-Reno of Hutchinson, Shawn (David) Rubino of Eugene, Oregon, Jeffrey (Kelli) Monahan of Silver Lake, Shannon (Todd) Konen of Silver Lake, Josh Monahan (special friend Emily Vogt) of Lester Prairie, Tammy (Todd) Bechtold-Schlangen of St. Joseph, Kristi (Randy) Zimmer of St. Joseph, Ben (Kimberly) Monahan of St. Michael, Brianna (Dan) Krause of Hutchinson, Daniel Monahan (fiancée Laura Hughitt) of Minneapolis, Molly Monahan of Hutchinson, Ryan Monahan (special friend Kellie Higgins) of Union Town, Pennsylvania, Sean Monahan of Latrobe, Pennsylvania and Kathryn Johnson of New York City, New York; great-grandchildren, SHane Reno, Joey Rubino, Madison Monahan, McKenna Monahan, Miah Monahan, Mylea Monahan, Hayley Konen, Tanner Konen, Cortney Konen, Wyatt Konen, Lucy Monahan, Ruby Monahan, Curtis Hiltner, Mitchel Hiltner, Lexie Hiltner, Cody Schlangen, Riley Zimmer, Maison Zimmer, Brandon Zimmer, Lindsey Zimmer, Easton Monahan, Adyson Monahan and William Joseph Monahan; great-great-grandson, Barrett Hiltner; sisters, Rita Stevens of Hutchinson and Olive Krueger of Plymouth; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
