Matmen top Knights in St. Peter

Back-to-back nights of grappling action closed out the month of January for the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team.
The Panthers began last week with a trip south for a triangular meet in St. Peter on Thursday, Jan. 25.
GSL/LP went 1-for-2 on the night, defeating Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 44-30 and falling to the host Saints 58-7.
The Panthers rallied from an early deficit to top the Knights. Sawyer Varpness got his team going with a 17-2 technical fall at 113 pounds. Earning wins by fall in the middle matches of the evening were Zachary Voelz (132), Keegan Lemke (145) and Riley Butcher (152). Brent Lipke also claimed a win by forfeit at 138.
Cody Rae helped stem an attempted LCWM rally with a win by fall at 182 before Aaron Castillo clinched the team win with a 5-3 decision at 220. Brandon Holmers finished off the competition with a win by fall at 285.
Carter Ruschmeier put GSL/LP up early on St. Peter with a 3-1 win at 106, however the Saints dominated from there to win by 51 points. Castillo highlighted the matchup with an 11-1 major decision at 195.
The Panthers returned home for a Wright County Conference dual meet against Dassel-Cokato on Takedown Cancer night on Friday, Jan. 26.
Ruschmeier got the night off to a winning start with a 16-4 major decision at 106, but the majority of the night belonged to the Chargers, with the visitors emerging with a 54-19 win.
Rae earned his 50th career varsity victory with a 58-second win by fall at 170 pounds to highlight the evening. Other GSL/LP wins came from Voelz (9-4 at 132) and Holmers (fall, 1:11) at 285).
There’s just one meet on the card for the Panthers this week, with the team traveling to Olivia for a quadrangular meet against BOLD, Eden Prairie and Eden Valley-Watkins at 5 p.m. Friday.
