McLeod County 4-H’ers attend Regional 4-H Camp June 19-21

Four campers and one counselor from McLeod County attended the 2018 Regional 4-H Camp: Chloe Lucas, Kyleigh Lucas, Travis Mohs, Aubrey Schmidt and Counselor Emily Ward.
The Regional 4-H Camp is a unique camping opportunity for youth who have completed third through sixth grades. The camp was held at the University of Minnesota Morris campus June 19-21. There were 108 youth from 12 counties participating in the annual 4-H Camp. In addition, 28 teenage youth who were trained to be camp counselors provided leadership during camp.
Minnesota 4-H conducts camps all year long at various locations. At camp, youth can work on projects they are already doing or start new ones. 4-H campers have the same high-quality, hands-on learning experiences that they have in clubs, events or fairs, but can spend more time on them. Activities are designed to develop a greater awareness, understanding and appreciation of nature and our relationship to it.
Research shows that a well-planned youth camp improves self-esteem, environmental awareness, peer relationships, and has other measurable positive outcomes.
Campers had the opportunity to select from one of six educational track choices focusing on various 4-H project areas including: agriculture, horticulture, entomology, STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), and crafts and fine arts. In addition to time spent in educational tracks, the campers also participated in large and small group games and relays, swimming at the RFC, speakers, evening programs, campfires, and flag-raising and lowering ceremonies each day.
