McLeod County announces new election equipment

McLeod County Interim Auditor Treasurer Connie M. Kurtzweg would like to inform voters of new technology within our McLeod County polling places beginning with the August Primary Election, as electronic poll books are replacing the paper rosters used to check in and register voters. Electronic poll books were authorized throughout the state with a 2014 law and have been used in previous elections in Minnesota counties. McLeod County applied and was awarded special funding to purchase the electronic poll books to be used in the 2018 elections and forward. The Poll Pads are currently used in 49 Minnesota counties, 27 states and Canada.
In the past some of our precinct paper rosters were separated by sections of the alphabet, and now voters will be welcomed to any line any time. Each electronic poll book includes an iPad and mini printer, which will print the voter’s oath for each voter to sign. The rest of the voting process will remain the same, with voters receiving a paper ballot for completion and insertion into ballot counting machine.
With election security the top priority, the iPads will not have Wi-Fi connectivity in any of the polling locations in McLeod County. They will have blue tooth connectivity between the units within the polling place to keep the electronic rosters synced.
