McLeod County, city of Hutchinson consider joint purchase of grinder

The joint purchase of a material grinder with the city of Hutchinson could help McLeod County on its way to becoming a processing center for agricultural plastic, boat wrap and other plastic materials.
The McLeod County Solid Waste Advisory Committee, which consists of the five county commissioners, met Wednesday morning, July 27, and heard that the county has been awarded a $600,000 facilities capital assistance program (CAP) grant from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) to help it develop an auxiliary building and purchase equipment for processing the plastic.
Sarah Young, solid waste acting director and coordinator, said the county had applied for the grant twice — first to cover both plastic and other problematic material, and the second time focusing just on plastic. Both times, the application was passed by, she said, but the MPCA recently called and said it could appropriate the funds for the county.
Young said the MPCA has been watching McLeod County’s efforts to become a centralized location for processing ag and other plastic wrap.
“Basically, they called it a building block for the whole state,” said Young.
“It’s pretty obvious that Pollution Control wants us to have a success story here,” agreed Commissioner Paul Wright.
