McLeod Publishing earns 5 awards in MNA contest

McLeod Publishing, Inc., garnered five awards in the Minnesota Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.
The awards were announced at the association’s annual convention, held Thursday and Friday of last week in Bloomington.
Alissa Hanson, a creative designer with The McLeod County Chronicle and the Glencoe Advertiser, received a first-place award in the self-promotion or house ad category.
Hanson’s winning entry was a full-page advertisement announcing the retirement and open house for Rich Glennie, Chronicle editor, who retired in August 2014.
“Very good ad for the community to see,” a judge said. “I love to see the statistic on Chronicles.”
The Chronicle received second place for its classified ad section.
“Nice header and cool in-house ad here. Solid entry,” a judge stated.
A group effort earned The Chronicle a third-place award for best advertisement. The advertisement was a congratulations of the Panther football team. Contributing to the advertisement were creative designer Jess Bolland, photographs by former sports editor Josh Randt, and was sold to advertisers by Sue Keenan and Brenda Fogarty.
“Good idea to squeeze in lots of memories of the season,” judges said. “Attractive ad.”
The Chronicle also received a third-place award for its website.
“Site was very well done,” a judge wrote. “Also very competitive entry in this division. We’d love to see a bit more focus on multi-media contest — another slide show or video feed?”
The Chronicle competes with other weeklies with circulations of 2,501 to 5,000 in the contest.
Former Silver Lake Leader and Chronicle staff writer Alyssa Schauer received a second-place award in the portrait and personality category for a photograph that appeared in the Silver Lake Leader in December 2013. The photo was of an infant on Mrs. Claus’ lap.
“Priceless photo of one not-so-happy young person being held by Mrs. Claus,” wrote the judge. “The expression on Mrs. Claus is very warm and comforting. Nice catch of expression on both faces.”
