Memorial Day services set in Glencoe, other communities

Memorial Day services have been planned in Glencoe and surrounding communities for Monday, May 25.
The Glencoe observation is set for 10 a.m. in the Glencoe-Silver Lake High School gymnasium, and is co-sponsored by VFW Post 5102 and American Legion Post 95. The guest speaker will be Mark Hoberg, a retired lieutenant colonel with the National Guard. The American Legion Post also will have a presence at Good Shepherd’s worship on Sunday morning, and at the St. Pius X Mass at the Catholic Cemetery at 9 a.m. Monday.
The Plato Memorial Day service, hosted by Plato American Legion Post 641, will be held at 9 a.m. in the Plato Hall.
The Silver Lake American Legion Post 141 is sponsoring the program in that community, which starts at 10:30 a.m. with a parade on Main Street to the Legion Park, where the ceremony will begin at 10:45 a.m. (in case of inclement weather, the program will be moved to the Silver Lake Auditorium).
The guest speakers for Silver Lake’s program are Van and LeeAnn Karg. Van Karg, a native of the Hutchinson area, is a U.S. Army veteran from the Vietnam War, in which he was wounded on Jan. 12, 1967. He was discharged in November 1967, and worked for several companies in the area, as well as a professional tree trimmer. He retired from 3M in 2007. Since then, he and his wife, LeeAnn, have devoted their lives to their family and volunteering, particularly with veterans’ issues.
The program will be followed by a community potluck at the Legion.
New Auburn’s program, sponsored by VFW Post 7266, is slated for 11 a.m. at High Island Cemetery in New Auburn. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Bob Miner.
The Brownton Memorial Day service, sponsored by American Legion Post 143 and its Auxiliary, is slated for 10 a.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery. The guest speaker will be Jerry Block. There will be a color guard, rifle squad and the names of the deceased will be read. The ceremony will be followed by a potluck at the Brownton Community Center at 11:30 a.m. The post will provide chicken, and everyone should bring a dish to share. Also following the service, David Sommerdorf will be displaying a Corvette for the veterans.
The Stewart Memorial Day service, sponsored by American Legion Post 125 and its Auxiliary, will be at 11:30 a.m., either at the Stewart Fire Barn or the Community Center, depending on the size of the crowd. A potluck will follow.
At about 2 p.m., U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar will present the Kottke family with medals intended for Norman Kottke, a World War II veteran who was shot down during the war.
