A message of gratitude for service

Sgt. Vihin Patel’s message at the annual Glencoe-Silver Lake High School (GSL) Veterans Day program had a strong theme running through it — appreciation for those who have served in the nation’s armed forces.
Those who served, Patel told the audience, “have given you the freedom and the opportunities to enjoy each day.”
Patel, who lives in Glencoe, is a U.S. Marines veteran who served in Iraq, and is now in the Army National Guard.
“Whenever our nation has faced a challenge, the men and women of our armed forces have risen to that challenge,” Patel continued.
Patel said he appreciates efforts to “preserve the historical significance of this day” with programs such as those at GSL.
He also said that Veterans Day should honor not just those who have served in the past, but “those who have served in the past, the present and the future for their courage, sacrifices and willingness to serve.”
Patel also encouraged those present to “say a prayer for those service members who can’t be here today, so that they can make it home someday to their loved ones.”
The program also recognized those GSL employees who have or are serving in the military, including Jeff Jenson, U.S. Navy; Don Bohnert, U.S. Marine Corps; Mark Wigern, U.S. Army; Michelle Willhite, Army National Guard; and Randy Johnson, U.S. Navy.
Also recognized were students who either are serving or will be serving in the military, including Pvt. Brandon Hernandez, Minnesota National Guard; Pvt. Nicole Llovera, Minnesota National Guard; and Tanner Chmielewski, U.S. Marine Corps.
