Monahan sets new girls' hoop scoring record; Panthers clicking

It was quite the week for Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball. The Panthers won two of three games – clinching a goal of playing at least .500 basketball before the return of forward Zoe Christensen and gave a top sectional opponent a fight to the finish on its home court before falling with optimism.
Oh, and there was the matter of crowning a new all-time scoring leader.
“Not a bad week,” coach Zach Otto-Fisher said with a smile.
The biggest story of the three-game stretch, which the subject herself hopes does not become the most compelling narrative of this season, came on Friday, Jan. 22 at Rockford when guard Maddie Monahan broke the team’s scoring record.
Monahan’s historic hoop, which came – as so many have – on a steal and uncontested layup in the second half of a 73-53 victory over the Rockets, propelled the junior past former record holder Brittany Theisfield and into first place among Panthers’ career scorers.
“I knew that I needed 25 points to do it,” Monahan said. “I didn’t think I was going to score 25 at Rockford, but ended up having a pretty good game.”
