Muriel Fern Larson, 97, of Glencoe

Muriel Fern Larson, 97, of Glencoe, formerly of Brownton, died Friday, March 25, 2016, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 8, at Grace Lutheran Church in Brownton with the Rev. Andrew Hermodson-Olsen officiating. Bonnie Westmiller was the organist. The Rev. Andrew and Rosine Hermodson-Olsen sang “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “How Great Thou Art.” Congregational hymns were “Borning Cry” and “Day By Day.”

Muriel Fern Larson was born June 29, 1918, at home in Inez (Inez later changed its name to Black Duck). Her parents were David and Florence (Anderson) Wester. She attended school through sixth grade in Inez. At the age of 13, she moved to Bemidji to stay with her aunt, Dorothy Blesi, in order to complete her schooling. She would have had no transportation to high school if she had stayed at home with her immediate family. She graduated in 1935 from Bemidji High School and then worked for the Youth Administration until the start of World War II.

In 1940, she married Harry Larson. They moved to Minneapolis. Soon after her marriage, Mrs. Larson began employment at Sears & Roebuck, and worked there until they moved to Marshall in 1945 to own and operate a Surge Dairy Farm Equipment Co. They sold that a few years later and returned to Minneapolis, where Mrs. Larson regained her employment with Sears until her retirement in the early 1980s. She worked for Sears for a total of 35 years.

She and her husband shared 23 years of marriage, until Mr. Larson died unexpectedly in 1963.

In her retirement, Mrs. Larson traveled with friends. She took up china painting, and traveled to shows and exhibits. She excelled at china painting and achieved the status of “professional” in that hobby.

In 2000, Mrs. Larson moved to Brownton to be close to her sister, LaVerne Riemann, who is 10 years younger. After a struggle with breast cancer in 2001, she had a successful recovery. She loved being a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Brownton. She enjoyed flower gardening, embroidery, visiting with good friends, shopping and sorting through 90 years of family “stuff.”

In 2007, Mrs. Larson had her second round of breast cancer, and she had great success this time, also. As of 2014, her oncologist told her that she was in the clear and that was great news for everyone.

In November 2012, she had a small fracture on her right hand, and was unable to stay alone, which led to a “short stay” at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care. She enjoyed herself so much she asked to stay. She was 94 years old at the time. She loved the people and especially the food.

When she was asked to what she attributed her great health and age, she’d always respond “my father was a good provider, my mother was a good cook, and I was a darn good eater!” She was living proof of that. She was “the lady who no one could not love.”

She was diagnosed with dementia in the years before being admitted to the nursing home, and that progressed until her death at age 97.

She was a very blessed lady and all were blessed to have known her. Blessed be her memory.

She is survived by her sister, LaVerne Riemann of Livingston, Texas; niece, Cynthia Riemann de Lopez (husband Pachi) of Conroe, Texas; nephew, Bruce (wife JoAnn Riemann of Palm City, Florida; great nephew and great niece, Kyle Riemann and Sarah Riemann; special friends, Diane Heil, Roger Lawson, Gene and Barb Remund and Rose Fonder.

She had no children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Florence Webster; husband, Harry Larson; brother, Delmar Wester; brother-in-law, Leonard Riemann; grandmas and grandpas and many aunts and uncles, all of whom she spoke of often.

Arrangements were with the Dobratz-Hantge Chapel in Hutchinson. Online obituaries and guest book are available at www.hantge.com.
