Netters end season at sectional tournament

The lone remaining competitors for the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ tennis team saw their seasons come to a close in the Section 2A individual tournament on Thursday, Oct. 15 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

Senior Lindsay Wedin and junior Teanna Vorlicek, seeded sixth in the doubles bracket, defeated Julia Elmquist and Marissa Johnson of Southwest Christian 6-1, 6-0 in opening-round play before falling 6-4, 6-2 to Kelli Hanson/Josie Carlson of St. Peter in the quarterfinals.

It was the final high school match for Wedin, who played for the Panthers for four seasons and was the lone returning varsity player on this year’s squad.

The duo of Mac Monahan and fellow sophomore Allie Harpel lost in their section opener to eventual section champs Molly Smith and Libby Moakley of Holy Family Catholic in straight sets: 6-1, 6-1.

In singles play, eighth-seeded freshman Chelsea Bandas rallied to defeat Southwest Christian’s Amy Harrison in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) before falling to top-seeded Grace Sperr of Holy Family: 6-1, 6-1.

Another Panthers freshman, Justine Helmbrecht, lost her opener to sixth-seeded Sophie Lynch of Holy Family by a 6-0, 6-1 score.
