Netters top Sibley East

The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ tennis team has its season in full swing already, having claimed one win out of five matches played.
“We’re a work in progress,” coach Robb DeCorsey said. “The key word is progress.”
A home invitational meet against Blue Earth, United South Central and Sibley East kicked off the season on Tuesday, Aug. 22. GSL claimed one win on the day, gritting out a 4-3 defeat of Sibley East.
Justine Helmbrecht claimed a straight-sets (6-3, 6-3) win at No. 1 singles, as did Krissy Major (6-4, 6-4) at No. 4.
The drama came at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles. Grace Draeger won a 10-6 third set after splitting her first two sets 6-1, 2-6, to claim her singles’ win. In doubles play, the duo of Addi Stuewe and Lilly Schmitt prevailed 14-12 in the third set after splitting their first two sets 6-2, 4-6, to help clinch the team win.
GSL lost 7-0 to Blue Earth and 6-1 to USC to round out the day. The No. 3 doubles tandem of Kenzie Davis and Sacha Willhite earned a three-set win (6-2, 2-6, 10-8) against USC.
Three days later, the Panthers hosted New Prague and Roseau, falling 7-0 to each, before a scheduled appearance in the New Prague Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 26, was cancelled due to rain.
GSL traveled to play at Orono on Tuesday, Aug. 29, after the Chronicle went to press. The Panthers are slated to play at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter on Friday morning.
