New courthouse entry open, jail pod occupied

The first phase of the McLeod County jail expansion and courthouse security project is complete, with the new entrance on the east side of the building now open to courthouse visitors.
McLeod County Sheriff Scott Rehmann said the new jail cell “pods” also are complete and are in use. The new space adds 17 beds to the former 35-bed space for a total of 52 beds. The layout of the new area allows the expansion without adding jail staff.
The new entry way, facing east off the former Ives Avenue, is airy and allows access to all levels of the courthouse and law enforcement center either by stairs or a new elevator. There also are new bathrooms in the area.
Rehmann said that when the courthouse proper closes at night, the entry way can still allow access to the sheriff’s office, while doors will be closed and locked to the court administration area and the rest of the courthouse.
