Norma Frieda Engelmann, 92, of Plato

Norma Engelmann

Norma Frieda (Panning) Engelmann, 92, of Waconia, formerly of Plato, died peacefully on Oct. 1, 2017, at the Auburn Home in Waconia.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 8, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato with the Rev. Tyson Mastin officiating. Yvonne Schuette was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Beautiful Savior,” “When Peace, Like a River,” “Abide With Me” and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives.”
Honorary casket bearers were her granddaughters, Sarah Engelmann, Teresa Logue, Erin Penning, Heather Remer, Jennifer Emery and Katrina Lorenzen. Casket bearers were her grandsons, Daniel Dittmer, Bryan Dittmer, Mark Engelmann, Chris Engelmann, Josh Engelmann, Brad Bierstadt, Adam Birkholz, Joseph Mathews, Zach Roth, Jacob Roth and Mitchell Roth.
Interment was in St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Plato.
Norma Frieda Engelmann was born Dec. 3, 1924, at home in Hamburg, the daughter of William and Martha (Jaus) Panning. She was baptized as an infant on Dec. 14, 1924, and was confirmed in her faith as a youth on April 10, 1938, both by the Rev. H.J. Boumann at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg. She received her education at Emanuel Lutheran Church parochial school in Hamburg.
On Nov. 25, 1945, she was united in marriage to Elmer John Engelmann by the Rev. Wohlfiel at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg. The couple made their home on a farm north of Plato. Their marriage was blessed with eight children, Marianne, Harlan, Wallace, Linda, Roger, Nancy, Karen and Jane. They shared over 65 years of marriage before Mr. Engelmann’s death on Nov. 24, 2011.
In addition to being a loving wife, mother and homemaker, Mrs. Engelmann helped on the family farm. She was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato, where she volunteered to serve at funerals and to make quilts.
She was family oriented and a hard worker. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, baking, canning and playing cards, especially 500.
She is survived by her children, Linda (Gary) Bierstedt of Norwood Young America, Roger (Peggy) Engelmann of Plato, Nancy (Robert) Birkholz of Lester Prairie, Karen (William) Mathews of Hutchinson and Jane (Larry) Roth of Lester Prairie; son-in-law, Dennis (Charlotte) Dittmer of Plato; daughter-in-law, Betty Ann Engelmann of Plymouth; grandchildren, Daniel Dittmer (friend Allison Long), Bryan (Amy) Dittmer, Sarah Engelmann, Mark Engelmann, Teresa (Jeff) Logue, Chris Engelmann, Josh (Kristin) Engelmann, Brad (Theresa) Bierstedt, Erin (Brett) Penning, Adam (Dana) Birkholz, Heather (Charlie) Remer, Jennifer (Chad) Emery, Joseph (Rachel) Mathews, Katrina (Cody) Lorenzen, Zach Roth, Jacob Roth and Mitchell Roth; great-grandchildren, Karsten and Eleanor Bierstedt, Samantha Logue, Ashley (Tim) Sayles, Josh Logue, Jack and Evelyn Remer, Hailey and Clayton Birkholz, Ethan Smith, Abigail Lorenzen, Anika and Rowan Mathews, Liam and Finn Emery and Colton and Avery Dittmer; great-great-grandchildren, Anthony Stavinoha, Tucker Sayles and Braxton and Gunner Logue; brothers and sister, Melroy Panning of Norwood Young America, Gordon (Lois) Panning of Hamburg, Werner (Evelyn) Panning of Aitkin, William (Deanna) Panning of Hamburg and Martha (Harvin) Smith of Norwood Young America; sisters-in-law, Helma Engelmann of Glencoe and Marilyn Bjelland of Norwood Young America; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Martha Panning; husband, Elmer Engelmann; children, Marianne Dittmer, Harlan Engelmann and Wallace Engelmann; siblings, Raymond (and wife Myra) Panning, Roland Panning, Hillard Panning, Marvin (and wife Violet) Panning, Helma (and husband Karl) Hoernemann, Marlaine Panning and Irmgard (and husband Elmer) Otto; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ruben Engelmann, Ella Engelmann and Raymond (and wife Lois) Engelmann.
