Panther boys’ cagers trying to keep chins up

As promising as last week was for the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team, the results still showed the squad slipping further behind in both the Wright County Conference West and Section 2AA pecking order – and the strain is beginning to take its toll.
“The guys are playing so hard and are giving us a chance to win, but then we fumble it away,” coach Robb DeCorsey said. “It’s tough to keep the guys believing that we can do this – and we can.”
Last week began on the upside, as the Panthers recovered from a 25-17 halftime deficit to defeat visiting Mound Westonka 59-57 on Tuesday, Jan. 19, behind 13 points from forward Jacob Popelka and guard Mason Ahlbrecht.
Those happy feelings continued three nights later as GSL held a 29-26 halftime lead on WCC West leader Rockford. However, the Rockets rallied to claim a 47-44 victory.
“We started out pretty well on Friday, got some open looks and easy buckets,” DeCorsey said. “It was back-and-forth in the second half, but after we shot 63 percent in the first half, we only hit five shots in the second half.”
