Panther girls win Hayfield Tournament

It was a happy holidays indeed for the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team as the Panthers earned their first hardware of the season by winning the Hayfield Tournament. GSL ran its winning streak to three games with a pair of wins in Hayfield and hit a high water mark on the season with a 6-4 record.
Following up on a 44-34 defeat of Jordan on Tuesday, Dec. 22, the Panthers handed Caledonia just its second loss of the season with a 58-49 win in the tournament opener on Tuesday, Dec. 29. GSL came out of the gates hot, putting up a 35-22 halftime lead before cruising to the nine-point win.
Guard Maddie Monahan led all scorers with 21 points and also had a team-high four steals; guard Rachael Popp chipped in with nine points. Guard Mac Monahan and forward Maddy Kalenberg scored eight points apiece, with Kalenberg hauling in 14 total rebounds – with nine of those coming on the defensive end.
The next night, the Panthers finished off their tournament sweep by defeating host Hayfield 54-51 – ending the Vikings’ four-game winning streak in the process. The game was tight throughout, with GSL coming out on top in the hotly-contested matchup.
