Panther netters open fall season in hasty manner

While most Glencoe-Silver Lake sports teams still have at least another week before opening their respective 2018 seasons, the Panthers girls’ tennis team is already four competitions into its fall campaign.
GSL opened its autumn schedule on Friday, Aug. 17, at Jordan. It was a rough entry into the season as the host Jaguars served up a 7-0 defeat to the Panthers.
No. 1 singles player Justine Helmbrecht fell in straight sets to Emily Henderson, while Lily Schmidt lost 1-6, 1-6 to Emily Randolph. No. 4 single Katelyn Lemke also fell 1-6, 1-6 to Ella Bounds, while No. 3 singles Krissy Major put up a fight before losing 5-7, 2-6 to Jolie Wulf.
Jordan similarly swept through the doubles competition.
The GSL No. 1 duo of Kaitlyn Doolittle and Di Fleck fell 0-6, 4-6 to Alyvia Behr/Anna Braun in the closest of the doubles matches.
At No. 2 doubles, Sacha Willhite/Kira Mattson lost 0-6, 1-6 to Maddie Jerabek/Morgan Busse, while Taylor Hatlestad/Emma Malz fell 2-6, 0-6 to Ari Kraus/Lydia Cook.
The Panthers hosted their traditional GSL Quadrangular at the high school tennis courts on Tuesday, Aug. 21.
GSL opened the day with a 6-1 loss to United South Central in the first round of three matches.
Malz and Hatlestad did deliver the Panthers their first match victory of the season, defeating USC’s Kelsie Chapman and Lauren Zebro in a third set tiebreaker, winning 4-6, 7-5, 10-8.
Otherwise, all four Panther singles (Helmbrecht, Schmitt, Major and Lemke) all lost in straight sets, as did the doubles teams of Doolittle/Fleck and Mattson/Willhite.
Results were not available for the second and third competitions of the day as the Chronicle went to press.
