Panthers blank Royals in 5AA

Win No. 1 of the postseason is in the books for the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team. The Panthers, seeded third in the Section 5AA playoffs, coasted past No. 14 seed Watertown-Mayer by a score of 6-0 on Thursday, May 24, to advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
GSL starter Chandler Glaeser earned the complete game shutout win on the mound, blanking the Royals and ending their season. Glaeser went all seven innings, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out six batters.
Korey Johnson scored the only run the Panthers needed in the bottom of the first inning. He walked and then stole second base before being driven home on a Gabe Roepke single to make the score 1-0.
That’s how the scoreboard remained until the fourth. Taylor Schauer doubled home Dane Schwirtz before he rounded the rest of the bases on a pair of wild pitches to make the score 3-0.
Roepke finished off the frame with a two-run double that plated Johnson and Spencer Lepel to all-but put the game out of reach at 5-0. Lepel finished off the scoring by driving in Carsen Streich with a groundout to first base to put GSL up by the eventual final of 6-0.
The Panthers swept all three games from Watertown-Mayer this season and did not allow the Royals a run in the process, winning by a combined score of 13-0 in this spring’s games.
With the win, GSL advanced to take on sixth-seeded Blake, in a game played after the Chronicle went to press. The Bears, 11-5 this season, thumped 11th-seeded Maranatha Christian Academy 12-1 in its sectional opener last week.
A win on Tuesday meant that the Panthers would host either No. 7 Litchfield or No. 2 Holy Family Catholic on Wednesday, May 30. A Tuesday loss sends GSL to Litchfield on Wednesday night for an elimination game in the one-loss bracket.
The winner’s bracket final is scheduled for Monday, June 4, at Vollmer Field, with the sectional championship game slated for Thursday, June 7 at Vollmer.
