Panthers clinch second-straight WCC West title

By running its winning streak to nine games, the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team also clinched the Wright County Conference West title as the Panthers prepare for the final week of the regular season.

“Back-to-back years,” coach Dean Schwirtz said. “It’s fun for the kids.”

GSL won two of its last three games by shut out, sandwiching a 4-3 non-conference defeat of Norwood Young America on Friday, May 13, with a 15-0 blanking of Mound Westonka on Tuesday, May 10, and a 4-0 victory at Rockford on Monday, May 16.

The wins gave the Panthers a 12-1 conference mark, mathematically eliminating second-place Annandale from a shot at the WCC West title before the two teams played on Tuesday, May 17, after the Chronicle went to press.

GSL needed just four turns at bat to utterly overwhelm visiting Mound Westonka, with starting pitcher Peyton Sell gaining the win after allowing just three hits and one walk over five innings. He struck out four White Hawk batters in earning the shutout.
