Panthers defeat Hutch in overtime

It was an exciting start to the new year for the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team as the Panthers began 2015 with a 62-56 overtime victory at rival Hutchinson on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
“Hutchinson is a good team and we knew that,” coach Robb DeCorsey said. “We knew it was going to be a battle and it was. We made enough plays to come out on top.”
GSL overcame a difficult shooting night to claim the clutch road victory. DeCorsey noted that despite his squad “getting good looks,” the ball showed a great reluctance to fall through the hoop. While the Panthers’ shooting woes made the game much closer than it otherwise might have been, he commended the team for finding a way to win.
“We missed a lot of shots early, but didn’t freak out or anything,” DeCorsey said. “We made enough plays to come out on top.”
Four GSL players finished in double figures in scoring, led by guards Mason Goettl and Teddy Petersen, both of whom recorded 14 points in the game. Forward Garrett Ober was a force in the paint with 13 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Guard Keaton Anderson scored 12 points with nine rebounds, while Jacob “Cubby” Popelka chipped in seven points and six rebounds in the winning effort.
“It was tough out there,” Goettl said. “Definitely a battle and insanely physical. Without a doubt, I’d play them again.”
