Panthers dominate Sibley East

The Glencoe Silver-Lake girls’ basketball team continued to find success against Section 2AA North rivals last week, besting Sibley East 55-41 at home on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
The victory, which preceded a weeklong break, gave the Panthers a 4-1 mark in contests against prospective section tournament rivals.
“This game was by far the most active we have been on defense,” coach Zach Otto-Fisher said. “It felt like we tipped over half [of Sibley East’s] passes. [Guard Maddy Kalenberg] got all the girls playing sound defense.”
Despite sinking just one of its first 14 shots in the game, GSL proved to be inhospitable hosts for the visiting Wolverines. Yet, the Panthers recovered from their early shooting woes to stake themselves to a 25-14 halftime lead.
“We did hit a few shots prior to half, and that really got the momentum going,” Otto-Fisher said. “At halftime we talked about coming out strong and not giving up the lead, but to build off it. That has been a struggle of ours all season so far.”
Guard Maddie Monahan sank a three-pointer to begin the second half as the hosts built their lead to 23 points before easing off the gas pedal. Otto-Fisher was able to tap into his reserves and find playing time for the entire varsity team as GSL cruised to the 14-point win.
