Panthers' season ends in heartbreaking fashion

Despite the deck seemingly being stacked against the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team in a Section 2AA North subsection semifinal against St. Peter on Thursday, March 3, the Panthers put together their most valiant effort of the season.

Unfortunately for GSL, the mighty endeavor did not lead to victory.

Despite losing a starting post player and contending with a trio of baffling officials, the Panthers battled the Saints – a team that had pounded them by 28 points three months earlier – until the final horn heralded a season-ending 65-62 loss.

“Losing stinks, especially when you feel you deserve the win,” coach Zach Otto-Fisher said. “We felt we did everything we could do to stay in that game. The girls executed the game plan, fought and gave 100 percent.”

Both the Panthers and Saints battled back and forth through the game’s opening moments. Seven straight points from guard Maddie Monahan leveled the score at 10-10 just over four minutes into the contest.
