Panthers storm to 3-0

Not upset-minded visitors nor unwelcome weather delays could not keep the Glencoe-Silver Lake football team from a less-than swift completion of a 3-0 record.

The Panthers overcame both a scrappy opponent and a two-hour lightning-filled intermission during the third quarter to defeat Annandale 40-13 in GSL’s home opener on Friday, Sept. 4.

It was a tale of two games – the first two halves that were played before a two-hour long suspension of play due to lightning and heavy rains, and what multi-back Teddy Petersen termed a “third half” after play resumed.

Before Mother Nature intervened, the Panthers struggled to maintain a lead. GSL never trailed, but led just 14-7 at the half on a first-quarter touchdown run by halfback Carsen Streich and a second quarter interception return for a score by defensive tackle Peyton Sell.

That edge was slashed to 14-13 as the Cardinals marched downfield for a score on an 18-play drive that consumed seven minutes and 45 seconds from the clock.
