Pedaling for a cause: Elshoff raising awareness for Lions

If you were outside at all on Monday, May 18, you experience the unseasonably cold, mid-40 temperatures and strong winds that made being outside almost unbearable.
Hanna Elshoff, 72, experienced these elements like no one else as she traveled through the area on her solar-powered tricycle.
She left Cologne Monday morning to travel to Silver Lake to speak at the Lions Club meeting. The overcast day proved difficult and she ran out of power near Lester Prairie.
Silver Lake Lions Club member Duane Yurek hooked up his trailer and picked her up.
Elshoff a member of the Chatfield Lions Club, is traveling through the country raising money and awareness for Leader Dogs for the Blind, a program supported by Lions International, which trains dogs to become service dogs for people who are sight impaired.
Elshoff, a native of Borstel, Germany, immigrated to the United States in 1961 at the age of 18.
While she lived with a host family in Fort Dodge, Iowa, she biked to and from her job at a local hospital. She wanted to take a bike trip to Texas to visit friends, but her host family talked her out of it, saying it was too dangerous.
She has regretted the decision ever since.
After visiting the prison in Fort Dodge where inmates help train dogs for the Leader Dog program several years ago, Elshoff decided she wanted to raise awareness for the program.
She still had the cross-country bike trip on her mind, although she thought it might be more difficult at her age.
After about two years of planning and some research, she ordered the solar-powered tricycle, which arrived on July 3. Elshoff rode it in the Stewartville Fouth of July parade the next day.
