Police respond to child with a ‘firearm’ at GSL Junior-Senior High

A Glencoe Junior-Senior High School student faces a school disciplinary process and potential criminal charges after school staff and police responded to a report of a student with a firearm this morning.
Nobody was injured in the incident and the child’s guardian took the child, police said. Superintendent Chris Sonju declined to respond to a request if the child remained in school for the day.
Police were called to the junior-senior high school at 7:48 a.m. Wednesday when students reported to administration a student in the cafeteria had a firearm in a backpack. Police found the child with administrators in the cafeteria. Police were called because the child was not cooperating with school administrators.
Information from the incident will be forwarded to the county attorney’s office for possible charges, said Glencoe Police Capt. Tony Padilla.
The so-called firearm was a black plastic revolver. It did not have the orange tip at the end of the barrel, Padilla said. Police were uncertain of the plastic revolver at any point had the orange plastic cap on the end of the barrel meant to distinguish it from a real firearm. The absence of the orange cap made the plastic revolver difficult to distinguish as a fake from a distance, Padilla said.
The school district notified parents by automated email and telephone messaging. Police posted information on the incident on Facebook.
