Proposal for private commercial campground tabled by commission

A proposal to develop a small campground at the Area 22 Paint Ball site, located along Highway 22 between Glencoe and Hutchinson, caused some head scratching among members of the McLeod County Planning Advisory Commission at its Wednesday, June 27, meeting.
Anthony and Amy Wagner, who operate the facility, would like to place eight to 10 vintage campers on sites near the Crow River to rent out.
However, that use is currently not allowed by county ordinance, and DNR shoreland rules indicate that the placement of the campers needs to be at least 300 feet from the shoreline.
Amy Wagner said that she had spoken with DNR officials who indicated that the county could adopt a statute that would govern planned unit development (PUD), which would make it possible to locate the campers closer to the river, and allow the county to regulate the conditions for allowing a campground.
