Raymond ‘Ray’ Ewald, 90, Silver Lake

Raymond “Ray” Ervin Ewald, 90, of Silver Lake, died Wednesday, May 6, 2015, at Cedar Crest Estates in Silver Lake.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, May 11, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake with the Rev. Anthony J. Stubeda officiating. Alice Nowak was the organist, and special music was by the Holy Family adult choir. Musical selections were “Here I Am, Lord,” “Prayer of St. Francis,” “How Great Thou Art,” “On Eagle’s Wings,” “Song of Farewell” and “Amazing Grace.”
Casket bearers were James Condon, Nicholas Schatz, Eric Tonn, Tom Condon Jr., Kevin Maresch and Marlin Maresch. Honorary casket bearers were Vincent Condon and Nathan Schatz. Military honors were by the Hutchinson Memorial Rifle Squad.
Interment was in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Darwin.
Raymond Ervin Ewald was born June 1, 1924, in Lynn Township, McLeod County, the son of William and Elsie (Gauger) Ewald. He received his education at District 20 in the Hutchinson area.
Mr. Ewald entered active military service in the U.S. Army on Dec. 13, 1943, at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, and served his country during World War II. He received an honorable discharge on May 11, 1946, at Camp McCoy Separation Center in Wisconsin.
On May 1, 1947, he was joined in marriage with Marie Catherine Condon. They shared 64 years of marriage before Mrs. Ewald’s death in 2011.
Mr. Ewald worked for many years at Hutchinson Manufacturing as a machinist and welder. In 1963, he and his wife purchased the Ewald Orchard and enjoyed their life there until 1980. In 1989, they opened Cedar Crest North in Hutchinson, where they cared for the elderly until 1998.
Mr. Ewald attended Holy Catholic Church in Silver Lake. He was a member of the Silver Lake Knights of Columbus, the Hutchinson American Legion Post 96 and the Hutchinson Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 906.
Throughout the years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
In 1989, they moved to their home on Lake Manuella, where Mr. Ewald could enjoy fishing often. In 2009, the Ewalds moved to Cedar Crest in Silver Lake for assistance with their daily cares.
He is survived by his children, Henry (Rosalind) Ewald of Darwin, Christina (Mike) Tonn of Hutchinson and MaryAnn (Mike) Niece of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Damon (Mona) Ewald, Denise (Danny) Fischer, Tanya (Chad) Bussler, Tara Ewald (fianceé Eric LaBraaten), Eric Tonn, Nathan Schatz (fianceé Becky Hazuka), Nicholas Schatz and Taylor Niece; 14 great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Elsie Ewald; wife, Marie Catherine Condon; and brother, Alvin Ewald.
