Retiring teachers: GSL’s Stensvad ready for next chapter in a very busy life after school
It's a bittersweet feeling, the idea of retirement. Roxanne Stensvad prefers the idea she's turning the page to the next chapter of her life rather than retiring from teaching.
After all, how does a person stop doing something they absolutely love doing?
For the record, Stensvad's career as a teacher at Glencoe-Silver Lake will come to an end this week. She's taught science at GSL for 40 years.
“I'm really going to miss this place. This was my first and only job,” she said. “I'll be missing the kids and all the staff I've worked with.”
Administrators at the junior-senior high school estimate Stensvad began teaching before about half the staff was born. Stensvad announced at the beginning of the school year this would be her final year. The decision gave the district time to find an experienced science teacher to fill the position, who are in high demand, she said.
“If I'd have waited until April (to file retirement papers), they'd all have jobs by now,” she said.
