RS Fiber to begin work in Brownton

The city of Brownton should finally see the installation of the RS Fiber network this summer, the City Council heard at its April 4 meeting.
Toby Brummer of RS Fiber said work on the fiber-to-the-home network should begin in June or July. The fiber network will offer phone, television and internet service to customers.
At some point during the construction, probably closer to fall, RS Fiber will host an open house to present information regarding the services to customers.
Brummer said those who already know they would like to sign up for service can do so now by filling out a card at the city offices, and they will be put on a list for installation.
In other business, the City Council:
• Heard from Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH), Inc., engineer John Rodeberg that plans and specs for the city’s comprehensive street and utility project is currently about 40 percent complete. He suggested a meeting with a couple of council members and the city maintenance staff to review the document, which is currently about 120 pages.
• Tabled action on the old grocery store building, which is partially caved in, after learning that the owner intends to forfeit the property for nonpayment of back taxes.
• Agreed to buy out a half-share in the sewer vac that it owns with Stewart and to use the equipment solely in Brownton. Stewart has entered an agreement with Buffalo Lake to co-purchase a vac truck.
• Heard from Tony Ashwill that he is looking to buy the Rickert Excavating building, formerly a county maintenance shop, on Division Street. Ashwill custom makes attachments for lawn tractors. The council agreed that the city would upgrade the electrical to the building if Ashwill does buy the building.
