Rural Glencoe home damaged by fire Monday
A rural Glencoe couple is homeless after an early morning fire Monday.
Glencoe Fire Chief Ron Grack said the fire was reported just after 4 a.m. at 5747 100th Street, southeast of Glencoe.
The home is an older, two-story farmhouse, and the fire is believed to have started in the attic near the chimney.
“It burnt through the roof and one room,” said Grack. Although the fire was contained to the upper story, there was significant water damage.
“It (the fire) didn’t get into the walls and didn’t get away from us, but there was a lot of water damage,” said Grack. “It’s not liveable by any means,” said Grack.
Grack said the couple were renters, and had been referred to the local Red Cross chapter for assistance. He did not know their names.
Grack said the department battled the fire in sub-zero temperatures, and used about 5,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze.
Assisting was the Plato Fire Department.
The departments were at the site for about three hours.
