Rural Stewart man dies in accident

Larry E. Rath, 70, of rural Stewart, died Tuesday when a Bobcat skid loader he was operating overturned in a ditch about four miles north of Buffalo Lake.

According to the Renville County Sheriff's Office, it received a 9-1-1 call at 5:18 p.m. reporting that a skid loader was on its roof in a ditch in the 52000 block of 840th Avenue in Preston Lake Township, and that the operator was still in the machine.

Responders extricated Rath from the skid loader and attempted resuscitation; however, he was later pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said Rath was mowing grass with an attached mower when the accident occurred. The accident remains under investigation by the sheriff's office.

Assisting at the scene were the Buffalo Lake police and fire departments and ambulance service, and North Memorial Air Care.
