Ruschmeier fourth at 2AA individual tourney

The Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team put the finishing touches on its 2017-18 season last weekend as several members of the Panthers’ squad competed in the Section 2AA individual tournament, held Feb. 23-24 at Mankato West High School.
Carter Ruschmeier was GSL/LP’s top finishing wrestler, with the eighth-grader finishing fourth overall in the 106-pound bracket.
Ruschmeier opened his tournament with a 7-2 decision over St. Peter’s Hunter McCann in a rematch of the battle between the two in the preliminary round of the Section 2AA team tournament.
In the championship quarterfinals, Ruschmeier suffered his first loss of the tournament, falling 6-2 to Watertown-Mayer’s Austin Gabbert.
Ruschmeier then won his next two matches in the consolation bracket, topping Hutchinson’s Grant Pierce 5-3 and Waseca’s Mason Gehloff 4-1 to advance to the third-place match.
Unfortunately, a 5-2 loss to Mankato East’s Chase Groh ended Ruschmeier’s tournament, while Groh went on to lose a “true second” match that determined the section’s runner-up state qualifier.
Junior Cody Rae (170 pounds) claimed a seventh-place finish at the meet, while freshman Zachary Voelz (138) placed eighth with a pair of victories.
Also competing for GSL/LP at the sectional was Sawyer Varpness (113), Aaron Higgins (120), Jakob Rusten (126), Carter Ziegler (132), Keegan Lemke (145), Riley Butcher (152) and Theo Luciano (160).
