Ruschmeier qualifies for state wrestling meet

Glencoe-Silver Lake freshman Carter Ruschmeier qualified for the State Class AA Wrestling Tournament this coming weekend after finishing second at the Section 2AA individual tournament on Saturday, Feb. 23.
Ruschmeier’s runner-up finish at 126 pounds earned him a trip to St. Paul for the opening round of Class AA individual competition, which begins on Friday, March 1, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
He is the first member of the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team to qualify for state since Aaron Donnay accomplished the feat in 2016.
The GSL frosh went 2-1 in his bracket at the 2AA tourney, held last weekend at Waconia High School.
Coming into the tournament with a 28-13 record, Ruschmeier received a first-round bye before gritting out a 1-0 win over Delano’s Clete Scherer.
Following that win, he faced fellow freshman Caleb Whipps of Tri-City United, who entered the tourney at 40-7.
Ruschmeier ended Whipp’s hopes of a state qualification by means of a 5-3 decision and entered the title round all-but assured of a trip to St. Paul as he had beaten both wrestlers battling for the third-place spot.
In spite of a loss to Justin Stauffacher of Scott West, who came into 2AA competition with a 41-5 mark, Ruschmeier did indeed qualify for a state slot.
Next up, Ruschmeier will take to the Xcel floor on Friday morning. First round competition begins at 9 a.m., with quarterfinals set to start at 4 p.m.
In addition to Ruschmeier’s second-place finish, Sawyer Varpness placed fourth at 120 pounds after a run that included a win by fall over Evan Ehmke of Mankato West.
Zachary Voelz at 145 and Jace Cacka at 113 each finished sixth place.
Finishing in eighth place in their respective brackets were: Dawson Varpness (106), Keegan Lemke (160), Cody Rae (170) and Riley Butcher (182).
