School Board adopts ’17-’18 year calendar

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board approved the calendar for the 2017-2018 school year during its regular meeting Monday night.
The calendar sets the first day of school as Sept. 5 for students in grades three through 12 and Sept. 6 for kindergarten through second-grade.
The last day of school for students is set as May 30 with graduation on June 1.
The original calendar presented at the meeting listed the first two storm make-up days as digital difference days and the third and fourth make-up days as Jan. 15 and Feb. 19.
Board Member Anne Twiss said some staff members had expressed the desire to change the fourth day from Feb. 19, President’s Day, as it is a contract holiday for staff members. Twiss made a motion to amend the calendar so the fourth storm day would be April 3 instead of Feb. 19.
Superintendent Chris Sonju explained that day was selected in order to keep the make-up day as close to the missed day as possible. Board Member Donna VonBerge also pointed out that April 3 would be in a different trimester than the original make-up day.
Sonju said he understands the request, as Feb. 19 is a paid holiday that would be lost if it was used as a make-up day, but the district’s contract does allow for the day to be used. In reality, Sonju said it’s not likely the district is going to need the make-up day.
Board Member Clark Christianson said the new digital difference days will also help. The first two storm days will be digital difference days with make-up days after that. VonBerge asked why the district wouldn’t save the digital difference days for months when there are less make-up options.
