School Board declines to cut band, fourth grade

Proposals to cut the elementary band position to half time from full time and to eliminate one section of fourth grade brought over 25 parents and teachers to the Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) School Board meeting Monday.
The proposed reductions were tabled in April for more discussion. The board also further discussed reductions at a work session.
Members of the audience addressed the board with their concerns about both items.
Among their concerns were the success the band program has had since the elementary band program was expanded. Band participation has increased over the last couple of years, largely due to the strong elementary program.
Districtwide, 320 students are expected to participate in band next year.
Parents felt that GSL’s strong music program attracts and keeps students in the district.
