School Board ponders proposed budget cuts

Each April, Glencoe-Silver Lake Business Manager Michelle Sander and Superintendent Chris Sonju give the School Board an update on the planning process for the next school year.
In overview presented Monday night at the School Board meeting, Sander explained an adjustment has been made to the 2016-17 budget because there are fewer students than projected when the budget was prepared. The districted budgeted expecting 1,581 students, but currently has 1,547.
The decrease of 34 students results in the loss of over $200,000 in revenue. Sander expects the district to end the fiscal year with the general fund balance at 26 percent of revenue, above the district’s policy of 20 percent.
As the budgets are prepared for the 2017-18 school year, the district is expecting an enrollment of 1,551. This number does not factor in any of the 30 students from St. Pius  X who may enroll after it closes at the end of this school year.
