Sibley County sheriff warns about scam
The Sibley County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a scammer calling area residents pretending to be various sheriff’s office personnel and using the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office name.
This person has been calling area medical facilities and businesses asking for specific personnel and telling them they have a warrant for their arrest. The caller then proceeds to tell the person that in order for the warrant to be cleared, and not get arrested. they have to purchase various cash cards and give them the information on the card.
In one specific case, a Sibley County resident was contacted and told there was a warrant for arrest for failure to appear for jury duty. The caller identified themselves with the name of a member of the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office. The resident was instructed to go to Casey’s General Store in Gaylord to obtain two MoneyPak cards. The caller gave very specific details, including court file numbers and the names of current seated judges.
In no instance will the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office or any other law enforcement agency contact residents and instruct them to give money over the phone.
